I am an Idiot.

I learned some valuable things yesterday.

1) Don't do your dishes in your underwear.
2) Throw out even slightly chipped glasses.

Now I guess I should tell you how I learned these two things the hard way. Saturday morning I woke up in a great mood. Trevor went off to the law library to study, and I made plans to clean up the apartment. I was feeling energized and had a list of things I wanted to get done.

Because I am super cheap and don't like throwing anything away, I insisted on keeping a chipped glass. I mean the chip was so blunt I didn't think you could possibly hurt yourself on it.

I was very wrong.

In my rush of doing dishes, I cut myself. We have all cut ourselves before, so when I saw the blood I thought no big deal. I covered my hand for a few seconds (you know that magical hold we do on our cuts, hoping that it will miraculously heal it, or make the cut not so bad?) but when I opened my hand.... I knew something was very wrong.
What gave it away? Oh just my skin opening up and my hand muscle peeking out at me saying...
"HEY! I have never seen daylight before, this is cool!"

Except it was so NOT cool. I had never seen a real life human muscle before by the way, so I was slightly fascinated. But I was in pain so I didn't have much time to be fascinated. I just sat there for a minute, trying not to freak out. I got my phone and called my mom... then I let myself break down. I knew it was bad enough I needed to go to Urgent Care. I don't know why but I needed the comfort of my Mommy to tell me to calm down and call Trevor. So that is what I did.

You guys have to realize... I have never had anything happen to me. I mean I did sprain my wrist once, and I fractured my foot. But other then that... I have never even had a cavity. So I was really scared of the thought of getting stitches. Waiting for Trevor to get home felt like it took hours. Which I guess I needed since trying to dress yourself with one bleeding hand in the air (trying to elevate, like my mama said!) made for a challenge. Lets just say the image was pretty comical. Except I wasn't laughing. I didn't get far, so when Trevor came home he had to help me get dressed. I guess I got a quick glimpse of what life will be like when I am an old lady... or heaven forbid something tragic happened to me.

So Trevor came home and checked out my wound... he barley looked at it and knew we had to go to the hospital. So off we went, after Trevor did up my pants of course. Awkward.

I have an irrational phobia of needles, so I was trying not to freak out. The sweet nurse, who was my age (wow... am I really old enough that the nurses are my age now?! what?!) tried to make me feel better by saying how the numbing shot felt similar to what they do for cavities... remember I have never had a cavity?! The doctor shook his head in disbelief at this... and really didn't believe me when I explained that even Trevor had never had a cavity. Hopefully this means less dentist trips for our kids in the future. I digress...

I had NO idea that they put the numbing shot IN YOUR WOUND. DIRECTLY. I started to cry a little bit and felt like a total looser. I quickly gained composure, I didn't want to look pathetic. I didn't watch of course.. I mean who would watch someone put a needle under you skin, literally on your hand muscle? The doctor did it about 6 different times mind you... eekk. It hurt, but wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Thank goodness for modern medicine. How did poor people get through this stuff back in the day? ouchie.

The doctor was very nice. He was actually from near my home town back in San Diego, so we chatted about that. He even complimented my nice neon pink nails, haha. He was trying to make me feel better I think. I wont lie though... for some reason him being from back home, made me more comfortable.
So 5 stitches later, and 1 Tetanus shot. I was done.
Oh wait... and one almost as painful bill, ouchie. There goes my Christmas/Birthday present this year :(

I should have known better to keep around a broken glass... so even if its just a chip in the glass... that can do damage too! Lesson learned.
&I should have known better about the dishes in the ginch too.  Yes... sometimes I say ginch, thanks for that dad, haha! Growing up in San Diego my family has had its share of fire scares. My family has been evacuated from our home on more then one occasion. My dad always told me I should wear pj's to bed in case we ever had to leave in the night.
For some reason I never thought of what would happen if something bad happened when you weren't wearing anything... but now I know!

I thought the pain was over... but the the numbing shot wore off... and now I feel like my hand is on fire. &no amounts of pain killer is helping. BAH.

So there you go people... learn from me.

1) GO NOW &throw out a anything with a slight crack in it.
2) GO put some clothes on.

p.s. by the way, I am not even remotely ambidextrous. typing this with my left hand took forever.

  1. I have had a mug with a chipped & cracked handle. I keep waiting for it to snap with a full cup of coffee in it. I have no idea why I keep putting it back on the shelf. Throwing it out now! I hope you get back to typing normally again soon! :) xoxo

  13. Sad! This is such a bummer! I'm sorry this happened! My husband sliced his whole leg open mountain biking in July and I have never seen anything like it. There's pics on my FB, you'll have to check it out. But it hurt pretty bad for the first couple days but healed REALLY quick considering the damage it did. Muscles have really good memory I guess so I bet in a couple days you'll be doing 100 times better! That's sad it kills though... :( Feel better Monster! Start Breaking Bad. That will make you feel better. Can you tell I'm really into you watching this? K now I have to pretend to be into the primary program. Get better!

  15. oh no! reading this gave me chills, I am a chicken when it comes to getting cuts or seeing others bleeding.

I hope your hand heals soon. somebody asked me to throw away a slightly cracked glass. I thought the person was being a bit dramatic because the crack is so small you can hardly see it. i am off to throw it away.

  16. Ow :( Sorry to hear about this love! My husband sliced his finger open when a glass literally EXPLODED in his hand while doing dishes. He refused to go to the hospital (being a huge miser) so he bandaged it up himself, but he still has quite the scar.

Hope the pain goes away soon!

  17. Ouch!

I'm paranoid about cutting myself so as soon as a glass has a chip in it - it's out.

  18. I have an intense phobia of anything that includes cutting into or piercing your skin. So I feel your pain. At least now you can tell people you got into a knife fight?

  40. don't you hate how expensive hospitals are!? my husband had to go to the e.r. once (the blasted e.r.!) and we had to pay five hundred and something dollars for them to write down his symptons, give him something that made him throw up, and then sent him home. seriously! blah. also i know what it's like to cut yourself on glass really bad. i hope you feel better!

  41. Welcome to the club.
I cut off a finger once, and cut a huge slice of hand off on broken glass in a sink, sliced off a giant chunk of skin on a paring knife cutting limes (that one REALLY hurt, lime juice!), as well as impaling myself when I failed to remove an avocado pit. Hmm.

Maybe I should stay away from all things sharp and weird.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh how horrible! SO sorry to hear that! BUT so glad you're okay!

    ReplyDelete
  43. So sorry love - glad you are okay! Oh gosh that must have been tough trying to get your pants on until Trevor came on! You really are a trooper. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yikes! Not fun. This almost exact thing happened to my husband, including the underwear part, expect he was trying to pit an avocado and the knife slipped! Hope your hand feels better soon :)

  52. My first thought when I saw the picture was, 'Oooo what pretty color coban [That's the name of the bandage covering your hand], we don't have that on our floor.'

My second thought was, 'Yiiiiiikes what in good gracious did you do to that hand to get that much coban?'

I'm sorry about your hand and your trip to the ER. And I totally agree about the ER nursie, cause I'm a nursie. And people stare for 30 sec when I tell them I'm the nurse. Cause I look like I'm still in high school :< Maybe some ice packs or anti-inflammatory medicines to help with the burning? The pain won't completely go away, but hopefully just enough to make it...less sucky?

    ReplyDelete
  53. SO SORRY girl!!!! Yes, no more broken glasses!!! Isn't it fascinating how we still want our mommies when something bad or painful happens? I'm grateful for mine too, that's for sure. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  54. needles make me cry too. Last year i sliced my finger open and had to go to the ER and get stitches....it was actually kind of amazing how i couldn't feel them stitching it after they numbed it, i was like "Did you start? ...Now? ...TELL ME WHEN YOU START!!" and the poor doctor was like "i've done 3 stitches..." The nurse complimented me on my nail polish as well. When he asked me if i knew what the white stuff was in my wound i said "my finger meat?" ...he informed me that it was fat and i said "PUT THAT BACK IN THERE." oh, good times.

  55. Ouchy ouchy ouchy! Poor you! And even worse about the bill. I'm British and it would never cross my mind that it would cost you personally to get stitched up. Long live the NHS I say! Hope you heal swiftly (and of course milk as much being waited upon hand and foots as all invalids deserve!)

  56. yuuuck, I'm sorry! That does NOT sound like a fun way to spend your christmas/birthday money. :( I've had stitches three times, but they've never given me the numbing shot directly in the wound - how weird! And NOT PLEASANT.

  57. Oh no! I could never deal with that. If I saw my muscle I would pass out and that would be the end of it. No bueno.

  58. wait wait wait. so apparently i'm not the best creeper - your husband is in law school tooooo?! kindred spirits for real. sorry about your hand! those are the saddest and i would have died from seeing my own muscle. in fact just thinking about it made my thumb twitch. get better sooooon.

  59. This is funny. Not your accident. But your story telling. I am super duper cheap-o too... and clumsy. Not a good combo. Happy healing!

  61. Oh my gosh, you poor thing!! SO glad to hear you are okay in the end but OUCH! I can't imagine looking down and seeing a muscle! Yikes!! Wishing you a quick recovery and props for typing this all with your left hand :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. Ack! This is terrible! I had a similar thing happen to me a while back, except I did it with a knife. And I passed out. Twice. And then when I went to the ER, I cried and begged the doctor not to give me stiches even though half of my finger was literally hanging on by a tiny flap of skin, because "hadn't I been through enough for one day?" Yep, I'm a giant toddler.
Hope your hand is feeling better soon!

    ReplyDelete
  63. Wow. I never knew a tiny little piece of glass could do so much damage!
Aww. Sorry you hurt your hand bad. I can't believe you saw the muscle. I would feel like passing out!
Thank you for teaching me a lesson about that!
Hopefully your hand will recover fast!

    ReplyDelete
  64. Your poor hand!! At least you have pretty pink nailpolish on ANDDD they let you have a red bandage. That's cool! Getting hurt sucks. Going to the ER, sucks too. But hopefull you'll be good as new very soon!
