confession &an update...



So as you may remember if you read this blog regularly, Trevor and I have put on some pounds over the last six months and made the cliche new years resolution to lose some weight! Thing is, I wrote that blog post before I officially weighed myself after Christmas. I knew I had weight to lose, but Christmas kind of did me in... the 12 pounds I had to lose was actually 19 pounds...! My heart stopped. I just couldn't believe my eyes. By far this is the heaviest I have ever been in my life, I honestly felt sick. How did I gain so much weight in such a short amount of time?! Honestly this weight has come on just in the last six months, which makes it even worse.

I have always been petite, and in reality I still am, but I am way over my normal/healthy weight, and I have been busting out of my clothes (I have been wearing a lot of my "fat" shirts haha), I haven't been eating healthy at all and I feel like crap.

My whole life I have been able to easily and quickly workout, eat healthy, get back in shape, and kind of sneakily go back to eating bad food. I use to bounce back so fast - but my body just can't do that anymore. My old resilient teenage body is officially gone and eating healthy and working out needs to be apart of a balanced lifestyle. I don't know what it is about hitting your lowest low, but it can be a real motivator! I have never cared so much in my life about eating right and working out for my body to be healthy then I do right now.

So now for the update, since January started I have literally gone "cold turkey" as I like to call it in regards to eating right. Can I just tell you the biggest difference besides the weight is ENERGY?! In the past when I would eat right I still always cheated a little. I mean, just a little bit. I always had the mentality that I could afford it, "you are young!" I would tell myself! 

I had never had a perfect consecutive two days in terms of eating right. Well folks I am here to say I just had a PERFECT consecutive week (well 6 days), and the results really shine through. Skipping out on just that one little Reese's candy, and all the other little extras that tempt us throughout the day has really paid off. I can feel it in my energy, in my skin, my weight, everything! Giving it up is so worth it. I really am hoping to be able to maintain it because I can tell such a difference in how I feel.

To add with the extra energy, my body has also responded, I have lost 5.5 pounds so far! I have been so impressed with how if you treat your body right, it will treat you right back. If you give your body just what it needs, it will serve you so much better. The past few weeks have made me want to take this journey a step beyond weight loss and health and towards really getting that strong body I think every girl imagines or wishes having at one point. Besides a few years in Lacrosse, I have never really been able to get muscles. I don't want to be a muscly woman by any means, but I want to be toned, strong, lean and healthy. One day at a time right?

So while I still have some more weigh to lose, I am going to be trying to add some more work outs into my routine that will help me tone up my body and make me stronger!

Now to be fair I did eat some naughty things on Saturday, but I am still beyond proud of myself for eating perfectly Sunday through Friday. You see, Trevor and I like to have a "free day." Now this doesn't mean you go wreak havoc, but once a week we just eat normally without being crazy. It is all about the balance and that free day keeps me from wanting to stop the healthy diet all together. Does that make sense?

  1. That is so awesome! That weight came off fast! I'd imagine the quicker you return to healthy eating habits and exercise the quicker the weight comes off. Good luck! I'm right there with ya trying to cut out the crap and get toned up again!

    1. It is so true! I think I lost the 5 so fast because my body WANTS to get rid of it, it is NOT used to having it on there and I didn't ease into eating right, I just STARTED and got back to eating right quickly and my body responded the same way!

  3. Well. I loved this post. For many reasons. But mostly because I am in the VERY same place as you. Once upon a time I was 30 pounds lighter than I currently am (it was when I was hardcore getting ready for swimsuit) but I am at my VERY heaviest now and I have a goal to lose 20 pounds. To be back to a normal BMI and have my heart not feel like it is hurting. To encourage a healthier lifestyle for me I have cut out all soda. I didn't drink it a ton, but just that thought reminds me of what is better to eat. And then I look at portion control. I drink more water. One goal is having a ripple affect. And soon I will be where I should be. Because I should be at least 20 pounds lighter, and hopefully I will be soon.

    1. So we have about the same amount to loose at this point! 20 poundsish. Cutting out the soda will be huge for you, that alone cuts out so many bad calories. We can motivate each other! haha

  4. Congratulations!! I just started running today for the first time since last summer and I feel great! It's amazing how much easier it is to eat healthy when you are working out. It's like your body knows what it just lost and doesn't want to bring junk back in.

    I try to just remember it's one day at a time. I can't go faster than that so I might as well make the best of today. The majority of the time it's eating well and occasionally it's cake :)

    I'm doing Whole 30 this month to help kick off the year right. then I'll go from there. one step at a time.

  6. Sooo so encouraging because I am going through the same thing. Since Caleb and I have been together(granted that was almost 3.5 years ago), I had put on 15 pounds. We started Insanity last night and are both doing low-carb meals and hoping to make this a lifestyle change. Aside from losing 3 pounds last week, my energy is up, I'm sleeping better, and my skin is brighter! I am thrilled! Hope you can continue with your motivation!! :)

    1. I have been doing low carb as well because my body responds super amazing to that! Of course I LOVE CARBS, which is probably why my body reacts so well when I cut it out haha, hope you can stay motivated too! Thanks for the encouragement!

Gosh it's hard though! Your post is an inspiration. Having energy is something I could use in abundance these days!

  9. Wow that's impressive! I've noticed as I get older that any bad food I eat, I can feel it almost immediately after. Which has become some good incentive to eat better!

  10. Oh I am on the same journey! I lost 10 pounds last summer, and mostly kept it off, but had plateaued since about September. I've still been working out 5-6 times a week, but I really had to crack down on my food intake. So the first week of January was spent kind of adjusting to making better choices, then starting the Monday of last week, I began to use food to FUEL my body and it feels amazing. I'm blogging all about it and tracking my weight and measurements and progress photos on the blog, which I think is definitely helping me keep motivated and accountable for myself. (At least so far.)

  11. Way to go! That's amazing! I've been trying to get back into a consistent workout schedule. I find if I throw myself into it 110% right away I get burned out really fast so I've been picking classes at the gym I like - spinning on Mondays, body pump on tuesday, yoga on thursday, zumba/shazam on thursdays, etc.
    It really helps keep me entertained and know that I don't have to do the same thing every day!

    1. I have slowly worked my body into the work outs too! But I didn't waste any time with the eating healthy, my body was just so ready for it, I was feeling disgusting! haha I love a good entertaining class and am looking to introduce some more into my work outs!

  13. Good for you, Alycia! I have gained 8 pounds in the past 3 months of our marriage, and my husband has gained 30!!! (although he needed it- he was a twig haha). I am very conscious of my body.. my clothes don't fit as well, and i had to get a bra two sizes bigger than what i had been wearing!!! but reading this is so motivating! I am doing my best to do "no sweets during the week" right now, and eating more healthily. Can't wait to hear more progress from you! I've lost about a pound and a half so far in the past couple weeks. slowly but surely... ahaha

    1. Nothing is more motivating for a girl then the idea that she can't wear her favorite outfits anymore because she has gained too much weight! haha I don't have the budget to get a whole new wardrobe and I love my clothes so it is to the gym I go! haha We can do it, slowly but surely!

  14. I feel ya! I was always able to eat whatever the heck I wanted when I was younger, but I stopped being able to do that about three years ago. But now that I'm much healthier overall in my eating and exercise habits than I used to be, I'm feeling confident in ways I never knew I could.

  15. Register for races! If you know you have a marathon coming up it's amazing how much you won't skip out on training!

    I also love packing healthy snacks. It's those weak moments of hunger that ruin healthy diets. Always having almonds, or cut fruit or veggies handy makes a world of difference!

    1. Camille, I actually just finished a Marathon in October! Which in fact was apart of me gaining weight! I thought, "hey I am running all the time I can eat whatever I want" haha But I agree, in the past signing up for races has been a huge motivater and made a real difference. Unfortunately I might have to wait awhile to do that seeing I hurt my knee during the marathon and so now I am trying to figure out stuff to do while it still heals!

      And a bag of veggies have been my go to this month :)!

  17. My boyfriend and I need to start now, too. At 25, I can tell my body looks different. I know to others, it doesn't and I'm still small, but it's about the way my clothes fit. Time for a change!

    1. Yes, no one knows your body better then you do! Sometimes people look at you and don't see anything different. But you know how well your clothes are fitting, how good you do or don't feel! Health is the end all goal, not size!

  21. I used to teach Yoga/Pilates up to ten times A WEEK before moving to West Jordan (now I can't find a job that works with my schedule!) so I was in amazing shape last year. It's been six months since I've had that lifestyle and I have felt a huge difference in my body/clothes.

    I can relate to not feeling awesome, even if in the mirror I look okay. The rec center near me offers a great deal on monthly punch passes without a membership, so I've been going to Zumba and Yoga 3-4 times a week. I already feel a difference in my body and definitely in my attitude. It's so much easier for me to be happy when I give my body an opportunity to pump out endorphins.

  22. Congrats on the 5lbs weight loss! Keep it up! I am struggling with the same. I lose about 8 lbs right before Thanksgiving only to have gained about 9-10 back. It's an awful feeling! Here's to a healthier 2013!

  23. I also gained entirely too much weight over the last few months. It was not good. So I've started off the new year strong, and am currently doing the Daniel Fast. I'm on day 8 of 21, and haven't cheated yet either - which is a huge deal for me! And I've lost 6 pounds! Good for you girl! I know we can both do this!

  25. Great job! Maybe going cold turkey is the way to do it, because the more cheat days I have the more I crave bad food. When I stick to it 100% I don't even crave the bad stuff. It's all about feeling healthy, so keep up the good work!

    1. They say after three days of no sugar etc. your body feels amazing and wont crave it anymore! I can attest to that, but it can still be hard when you SEE it and people are eating it all around you! haha Just have to stick with it!

  26. good job!! that's awesome 5 lbs is so good! i've found that the less i take care care ofmyself and worse i eat the more i hold on to water. (i mean..not just water, but usually a good amount of it) but healthy eating and heavy sweating don't allow you to hold on to water weight. i got in gear back in June and really haven't looked back. it wasn't really the eating that i needed to clean up. i've been a healthy eater for a lot of years now and really have no problem turning down sugary foods. but i hated working out. but i realized that i couldn't have the pinterest body and not work out. it just wouldn't happen. so i sucked it up and again, i haven't looked back. i don't LOVE working out, but i do LOVE what it has done to my body. it's tight and it's strong and i have muscles that show even without flexing. KEEEP GOING! so proud of you, pretty lady!

  29. I went vegan in July/August 2011 and immediately lost about 10-15 pounds. I've kept it all off. I started running in 2012 and now maintain my diet and exercise habit. I can eat whatever I want! I definitely try to keep it healthy but once a month I go hog wild on a batch of cookies or something ;)

  31. we have been doing weight watchers. I have lost 15 and my husband has lost 20. I like this out of any weight loss efforts I have tried because you don't have to do that cold turkey method. I find when you do the cold turkey method it becomes very hard and daunting and makes you feel like you NEED whatever it is you cut out. Weight watchers lets you have everything in moderation and in small portions so you don't feel like you are starving yourself or having to give anything up. I have lost weight eating pasta, and doritos, and chocolate on my diet. It's more about creating a lifestyle and learning to treat yourself in moderation with portion control. It takes awhile to completely transition to that, I still have my moments where I want to eat a whole bag of something or I just don't care moments. But that is human and I don't expect to be perfect all the time. But this is the most maintainable weight loss program without feeling like if I eat a cupcake my life is ruined! You also learn so much about portion control and how much you really over eat and how little you pay attention to portion sizes. It's amazing to see what you think a portion is versus what a portion really is! And it's not about working out to eat, it's about making working out a habit and normal routine and you get to eat a little more, but only after you go through your daily points, and ALL your extra weekly points. It's the last thing you get to use to eat more. Most of the time I don't even make it to those points! It is worth checking out if you really don't want to have all that guilt for eating something off your diet!

    1. Loved this! I wanted to do cold turkey just to kick start my weight loss since my eating habits were horrible. It actually wasn't too hard because I was THAT desperate to get started on eating better haha but I know it might be unrealistic to maintain at the pace I am at, and I believe balance is everything! I plan on working into that. Thanks for the suggestions, I know so many people who LOVE WW and it works wonders! SO cool for you and your husband! That is amazing! 15 and 20?! &yes, keeping track of portions and calories is the best thing I think you can do to really get an understanding of what we put in our bodies, it is pretty insane how many times you thought something you were eating was healthy or low calorie and little did you know... hahaha

  32. You'll get there Alycia! My first year of marriage I was working at a desk job and eating chocolate covered macadamia nuts which brought me to almost 15 lbs overweight. This was like in less than 6 months! I realized everything had to be in moderation. I also found a really good book that helped me strengthen my self-discipline with eating right and I learned that freaking out about it was making it all worse. And I totally had my "fat" shirts. So I chilled out and practiced self-discipline. I got it off by the second year of marriage and haven't had an issue with it since. I worked out continually throughout this whole time of weight fluctuation, what made the difference for me was food. Sounds like you are doing awesome! I need to be more like you and eat better as well!

  33. Great work Alycia!! Happy for you. I agree, activity and exercise are awesome...but when it comes to food, when you treat your body right you see it and feel it! I once heard the saying, 'six packs are made in the kitchen, not the gym'. It's so true. Exercise and activity are soooo important, but eating well in conjunction?? Makes you unstoppable!   34. girl, me too! I moved from VA to MI in September, and since then, I have gained 15lbs. I was shocked when I weighed in! In the midst of getting adjusted, trying to find a job, and just plain being lazy, I lost track of my health. I am not/have never been overweight or paunchy, but as i try to get back on track, it is so much harder than it used to be (coming from a 25yr old, thats sad). My goal is to start small and make it a point to go to bed a half hour earlier, only to wake up an half hour earlier and run (or if its too cold do jillian michaels 30 day shred). Get that heart pumping and good luck! :)

    1. love the 30 day shred! haha and yes, that is basically what happened to me. lost track and back in the day we could afford that but even in our early twenties it just isn't what the teenage body used to be and it isn't going to get better! hahaha So we better learn how to work with it now!

It is rough and scary and frustrating when your body doesn't respond the way it used to. I am not huge, but I am at my biggest point. I am totally on this journey with you girl! Keep up the good work!

  37. Have you by chance ever considered more of a plant based diet? You don't have to completely elliminate meat and dairy, if you don't want to, but by cutting down, it can do amazing things! My husband lost 40+ lbs in less than 6 months, and my mom and sister both lost 30+ lbs in less than 6 months! As for me, I had my second baby in November of 2011, and I am the smallest I have ever been. I have always been petite as well. But for me the diet helped me more mentally and emotionally. So truly, it helps physically, mentally, and emotionally, and it's amazing! Anyways, if you're interested, you can always shoot over an email or something :) good luck!!

  44. way to go! 6 perfect days is impressive...i made a resolution to eat healthier and work out, but i've really been slacking so far. I have upped my vitamins...does that count? ;) i would love to really tone up and lost 5-10lbs before a trip to jamaica in may. i think i can, i think i can! :)

  46. You are doing a fantastic job! Hopefully I can take your positive results in as a reminder to myself how great I feel when I am working out more. I don't think I've gained too much extra weight over the holidays (then again I refuse to weigh myself) but I have lost my regular work out schedule thanks to the chaos. I have felt a huge loss in strength. Are you eating anything in particular that is helping with said energy? Clean, paleo, etc? I've been trying to eat healthy its running in this dang cold weather that is so demotivating. I probably just need to suck it up. Thanks for this post!

  49. Go you!! 5.5lbs is awesome!! It is crazy how much more energy you have with just a few changes! I definitely agree with the cheat day! We have that too and I really think that if you don't do it every once in a while (or on the weekends a little) then you will end up just going crazy one day and eating an entire cake or something, hahaha. We started eating much healthier a few months ago and it has made such a difference-crazy what a few extra carrots will do, ha! Keep up the GREAT work!

I think I said in a comment above how I don't have any cravings, but then I will see someone eating something amazing, or I drive by that one fast food place and you kind of think about the tastes your missing out on haha BUT with that said, it feels a lot better to have that energy then that burger tastes ;)

I gained 5 pounds in about a month and a half since starting my new job because there is ALWAYS food for me to eat, but even looking before at how much I have gained since being married about 15 pounds, and I want to lose it, but its such a slow process. So I am super impressed with you!

  54. Congrats on the progress! Weight loss is a big struggle of mine! I am also working on a "Lose weight resolution" (along with a few others). I have been using the My Fitness Pal for quite some time (a year), but have been dedicated to it pretty hard core this past month and I lost 7lbs in the first week and half that I jumped back into it!!   55. I think you already look awesome but I know what its like to not like the number on the scale! Good job on the 5.5- thats awesome! And I know that the energy and skin thing make a huge difference as well! Always makes me wonder why I revert back to eating junk sometimes?!

But tonight I saw you in Body Pump at 24... and then left early haha, so I didn't get a chance to say hi and tell you how awesome this resolution is. Way to go girl! I am obsessed with the classes at 24, and if you ever need a gym buddy, I'm your girl! Have you ever done the Friday morning Zumba class? KILLER I tell you.

  58. I always put on some extra weight right around thanksgiving and christmas. This year and tried to nip that in the bud a little. I started running/walking a mile a day and quit buying tons of snacks. It's helped. You can do it!

    1. I always put on extra weight around the holidays too. Problem is that this time I already had extra weight on, so I kind of did a double whamy on my body!! BAH! Good for you though for taking charge and making efforts to balance out those extra goodies during the holidays!

  59. I think a health series is a great idea! And I'm also trying to bounce back from crazy eating over the holidays, and just had my first clean week too. Totally in agreement with everything you said about your body rewarding you for it.   62. Last summer I went through an experience just like yours- realized I'm not a kid anymore and if I want to see improvement I need to be serious about the change.

    Its a continuing journey, and I have admittedly fallen off the wagon a little over the holidays. But getting back into it has never been easier because it really is like my view on my life has changed and I dont think I can ever really go back to how unhealthy I was before.
    So good luck, and remember its a lifestyle change, sustainability is the key!
