swiss days...

There is a fun three day event I kept hearing all about in Utah called Swiss Days. There is an area in Utah that was settled by a large group of immigrants from Switzerland and they have been holding this event since the 1940's. Of course I wanted to go when I heard people raving about how fun the booths and entertainment were, and come on, fair food? You just can't pass up fair food.

Trevor had already planned a camping and hunting trip with his guy friends, but luckily for me my parents happened to be in town dropping off my little sister's wedding presents and helping Alex settle into his new house for the new school year. So naturally I begged them to do Swiss Days with me so I could see what all the fun was about.

I decided to get festive and put my hair into some milk braids - you know, to channel the Swiss vibe :) When we got there it was poring rain, but soon the sun came out and we could enjoy ourselves. We tried to find some traditional Swiss food... not sure if what we ate was really traditional Swiss food or not but it was scrumptious either way!

We had these amazing sausage sandwiches called knockwurst sandwiches that had a mustardy like sauce with some cheese, sauerkraut and pickles. I am normally not a big sauerkraut fan but the tastes just all came together perfectly and it was such a good sandwich!

We also had some fried bread with jam and honey poured on top. You can't really go wrong when you have fried bread and sugary toppings now can you? It was warm, sweet and perfect after walking around in the rain!

To top of the meal we got some cheese curds, a favorite of my dad's and mine. I love how it squeaks! I do prefer cheddar curds though, I like that stinging tang it gives :)

We ended the day off with a Dairy Keen shake - you know since we didn't get enough sugar from the fried bread! We had heard so much about Dairy Keen and how amazing their ice cream is, so we figured we would see what the hype was all about. They were pretty great! I wouldn't say they were amazing or anything, I have had shakes similar (JCW'S), but it was a great shake! If you are in the area and wanting some great ice cream, I would definitely stop by! I recommend the strawberry shortcake, it was perfection.

All in all it was a great day! Everyone always thinks I am from Switzerland because I am blonde. While I do not have heritage from Switzerland, it was fun to try and play the part :) It was fun to spend the afternoon with my little brother and my parents. Happy Swiss Days!

  13. What fun! I love events like this! We live near a town called Turlock that is home to a lot of Scandinavians, and they have a "Scandifest" every year (pretty much the same as Swiss Days) and since my family's Norwegian, we went one year and omg. It was the best. Your pictures here are making me want to go again! :)

  16. THis looks super fun! We live really close to Solvang, CA, which is (I think...) a swiss town that goes all-out like this. We'll go to buy cheap candles, drink yummy wine, and people-watch. Also eat food that's to DIE for that will probably give us heartburn. Delish.

  17. Ooh, this looks like so much fun. I love your milkmaid braids. Even when my hair was long, I really wasn't able to master braiding my own hair. It's super thick and likes to go rogue, plus my dexterity is a bit lacking. I tend to get asked if I'm German. In reality, I am about 50% German, but I really don't know anything about my German roots at all!

  46. I am living in Switzerland right now with my Swiss husband and we plan on moving to the States next year, so we will have to make our way down to Utah, not hard, and check out Swiss days. Thanks, now I know such a thing exists.

Wow, shakes? I have never seen a shake here, not even at Mcdonald's. I wish though, I could use a milkshake.

And I have never heard that thing about blonde hair...weird. There aren't that many blonde people here!
