We have all had that moment when we check the calendar, or we start to get a mild cramp, and we realize... it is that time of the month. You let out a sigh and know that you are going to have to endure another week of discomfort. If you are like me, you have shaken your fists into the air and asked why guys got such a lucky break!
I am going to get a little tmi right now, but seeing that pretty much all of my readers are women, I feel comfortable talking about this. Endometriosis runs in my family, and all of us girls have very long, painful, and heavy periods. We have been through it all in my family when it comes to the worst of the worst periods. Because of this, we have gathered different tips and tricks to help us find comfort during the most uncomfortable time of the month. Stayfree® pads has asked me to talk about the ways I find comfort during my period, and I figured since managing painful periods have been a part of my life, I would share the things that I do in case any of you could try something new!
HOW I FIND COMFORT DURING MY PERIOD
HEATING PAD - Oh my goodness! Heating pads were sent down from the heavens to save my life once a month. There are several different kinds of heating pads. I prefer an electrical one. I crank that puppy up to full blast and lay on top of it. The heat will loosen tight muscles and ease cramping. This has done wonders for me! My old roommate made a similar type of heating device by sewing up a small pillow case and filling it with rice. You just pop that in the microwave and voila, you have a heating pad that also molds to your body!
WATER - STAY HYDRATED! This is key while on your period, I mean, it is pretty key no matter what time of the month it is, but it especially helps when you are on your period. Drinking enough water will speed up your digestion and help prevent water retention caused by monthly hormonal changes.
STAY ACTIVE - I know, I know. It is usually the LAST thing you want to do. And if I am being totally honest, the first few days of my period, being active is pretty much impossible for me. However, forcing yourself to get up and be active has proven to help alleviate period pain. Stretching your muscles and increasing your blood flow will give quick relief from cramps. Exercise also releases endorphins into your system so you feel more relaxed, and it helps prevent the tightening of muscles.
TEA - For me, tea has always been a huge comfort when my body is under the weather, and that totally applies to being on my period! Besides sneaking even more water into your day, there are so many health benefits to tea. I drink herbal teas, and like to have one before bed. My favorite is Echinacea tea. Cuddle up in a blanket, with a hot mug of tea and your favorite TV show and I am good to go!
COMFORT FOOD - While I wouldn't recommend this for your diet, it is nice on a really bad period day to indulge in your favorite treat. I happen to be an ice cream girl, butter finger to be exact ;) As you can see from the image above, this totally happens sometimes. And sometime we just need it to happen. I am not saying you through all caution to the wind a binge eat on macaroni and pizza rolls for a whole week, but sometimes, it is just comforting to enjoy in those things that make
BE PREPARD - We have all had a moment when we are not prepared for our period. It arrives earlier than expected, or we run out of tampons during the week, there is nothing worse! How many of us have a story where we were not prepared while on our period and you had that moment where you have to go home and change *cringe!* I have a cute little pouch that I carry around in all of my bags that hold tampons and pads. That way you can easily take the cute pouch with you to the bathroom without everyone at work, or school seeing you trying to hide your tampon. Having great products on hand are a must. Oh and don't forget a great pair of sweats! ;)

I've never used a heating pad but feel like I need one today. Comfort food works too!
ReplyDeleteI second the rice heating pad!! So easy too!
ReplyDeleteI love the heating pad and chocolate on first day. I can't really eat heavy meals on first three days, it always make me feel more bloated. Yuck. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHeated rice bags are heaven sent!!! Oh, and I've definitely have to indulge in some dark chocolate too!
ReplyDeletei use midol, heating pad and herb tea. and of course choc - cindygaarder at gmail dot com

ReplyDeletei love a good heating pad, but i find i just always need more sleep.

The heating pad is a lifesaver. Also drinking lots of water and avoiding salt helps.
ReplyDeleteOn the first day of my period, I usually get home from work and take a hot shower and spend the evening in comfy sweats on the couch. I know I should be active, but I just don't want to!
ReplyDeletefor me tea is the most important thing xx
ReplyDeletehttp://claudiamedas.blogspot.com/
I usually schedule a good Netflix binge and then eat as much chocolate as my body will comfortably allow? Just kidding (kind of)! When I'm on my period, I just take it easy. Instead of busting out a Jillian workout, I'll go for a long walk. Instead of running 450 errands after work, I'll go home and put on some sweats/do some dishes/chillax on the couch. Basically just live the same life but at a slightly slower pace. :)
ReplyDeleteI love to pamper myself with a bubble bath and painting my nails! :) bridgetandderekreich (at) yahoo (dot) com
ReplyDeleteClary Sage oil is amazing, I also have Endo and its SO SO hard to function on those days...heating pad and my jammies and my couch!

ReplyDeleteAlso gonna go ahead and admit that I allow myself a good cry during that time every month! And loose tops because that period bloat is like THE worst.
ReplyDeleteI pamper myself by getting a full body massage.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I need a good cry and a glass of wine!

I pamper myself with fancy chocolates and a cup of coffee. I also like to be alone.
ReplyDeleteI pamper myself by taking care of my nails - I am usually taking on the phone or watching TV at the time, and I take off any polish that is on them, and then I groom my cuticles, file and shape my nails, and then if I want to put on a new color I do that (base coat, 2 coats of color, top coat, and drying drops). It's a necessary task, but also relaxing. :-)
