cliché new year's resolution...

I don't normally make official new year's resolutions, I like to make goals throughout the year whenever I feel I need to make a change. However this year Trevor and I are embarking on the most cliché new year's resolution there is. Losing weight and eating better.

When I first met Trevor he was a mean, lean, fighting machine! Sorry I have just always wanted to use that phrase in a sentence haha :) Anywho, as I was saying, Trevor was in shape, like in shape shape. He was the most disciplined eater I had ever seen. Through dating him and being married, he has taught me so much about nutrition, fitness and the body in general.

Then law school happened. HA!

Trevor hasn't had the same time he always did, and his life become much more stressful. I shifted to working full time and feeling so tired by the end of the day that the last thing I wanted to do is go to the gym. It has taken us awhile to figure out our new routines and I for one have been yo-yoing for the past year. I will lose the weight, and then put it right back on. I have never had to deal with that before and I can feel that my body isn't what it used to be, I am not seventeen anymore and I can't just eat whatever I want!

On top of that when Trevor is stressed out, he likes his comfort food. So the last couple months have been really hard for me to eat right with Trevor bringing home all the favorites, pizza, burgers, you get the idea? Then with Christmas approaching why on earth would I start eating healthy then? Biggest temptation month of the year! So then we figured we may as well as enjoy it and start with a clean slate after the new year. Pathetic? Maybe. Realistic? Yes.

So this is where we have found ourselves. We have not been taking care of our bodies, and we can feel it, and we are running out of excuses. Being honest, is there ever a good excuse to not be eating healthy? No. No there isn't. That unfortunately is a hard truth we ALL need to learn more about.

So I am about to have a rude awakening these next couple weeks. Thankfully, and not so thankfully when Trevor wants to eat right, he does, and he does it in full force. He likes to have us on a low carb diet, and for me, that is rough, because carbs are my dear, dear friend, so I will have to figure out something that really works for me personally.

Obviously this doesn't mean we will be perfect, but moderation, balance, and health is the key! If our diet is 80-90% healthy, I will be ecstatic with that! I mean 100%? Well I don't know about you, but I need my bowl of Macaroni and Cheese every now and then, or yes, I just might die.

I know I hold my weight well, but I am about 12 pounds over my normal healthy/working out/eating right weight and I feel like crap. I can see it affect not just my pants by my energy level. It is honestly the most weight I have ever had to lose, so if it seems small to you, it is still pretty daunting to me. The smaller amount of weight you have to lose, the harder it is to lose it. I hate those last 5 pounds, they are a killer and feel like they take forever. With my body making changes I know that this is something that will have to become a lifestyle if I plan on staying in shape. So here is to more balance in our life and figuring out a schedule that will serve our bodies better!

Anyone else trying to lose some weight or eat healthier in the new year?
What New Year's Resolutions are you guys working on?

  3. I don't need to lose weight--but both my husband and I are make a goal to start eating healthier, beginning on monday (we had to eat all the leftovers from the new year's party, first!) ;)

  5. I need to get into a workout routine also - I work full time 5 days a week and just so tired when I get home! I need to find a workout that I enjoy and can fit into my day to day life.

    1. Yup, it is that work schedule that kills me! Literally gone all day from 9-6 or later so when I come home I have to ask myself, okay, cook, clean, gym? What do I have time for! The balance is really hard.

    2. I agree with the working full time SUCKS when it comes to trying to balance everything. I work 8-5 and come home to be with my Husband and toddler....makes it hard to leave for another Hour just to come home and put my kid to bed whom I haven't seen all day. We also have been sick with the WORST COLDS EVER!! makes working out impossible.
The last problem I have is my Husband doesn't gain weight.....in fact he's trying to Gain.....now tell me how that helps me be healthy and lose weight.....IT DOESN'T!
      Happy New Year Alycia!

    3. Oh man throw a kid in the mix and I can't even imagine! You want to spend time with them when you get home from a long day! &yes, cooking separate meals for yourself and ones for your husband because you have different goals is just another stresser to add! If I had some magic balance advice for you I would share it! haha Let me know if you figure it out!

  6. Good luck! I've made some big changes in my own eating habits over the past few months, and I have never felt better! It stinks sometimes to pass up that second (third???) piece of pizza, or go running instead of watching a marathon of some reality show, but it's so worth it!

  7. Ditto for me! This last year has been rough on me and now I'm living with the aftermath of it all :) Here's to a leaner and more fit 2013!

  8. Losing weight and eating healthier is definitely on our list as well! We already eat somewhat healthy - I would say about 70% of the food we eat is good, but I, like you, want to push that up. But there is no way I can give up my chocolate, pasta and cheese. Nope. I'm about 10 pounds away from where I should be and I'm hoping to really work on that this year - the hardest part is getting started! I just wish the new year didn't start when it's freezing out - I would love to go on walks outside with our dog but not when it's dark and zero degrees! (oh look, excuses already - ha!)

more of mine include drinking more water, reading more, and getting into yoga.

  9. I am sooo in the same boat as you girl. I'm holding about 15 lbs more than my ideal weight, and I can so feel it. It's so tough finding time to work out while working full time. I got in the groove when I was working 8-5, but I changed jobs and now work 7-5 with every other Friday off, and getting in that extra hour earlier completely throws me off, especially with it getting darker earlier now. But hey, new year, time to start a new routine with more discipline! Happy New Year, lady!! I hope we can find time to see each other when you're visiting SD some time this year!!

  10. i'm pretty happy where i'm at weight-wise, but i am planning on eating more meatless meals to get more of the nutrients my body needs. i do need to find a way to get more exercise in, but weight loss right now isn't my prime goal. but i can definitely relate to not having much weight to lose but it being hard to get there--i came back from my mission 25 pounds heavier, and the last five pounds still haven't come off.

as for my big new year's resolutions, i'm mostly focusing on becoming way more organized (hence my challenge to myself i'm dubbing "50 weeks to organized").

    1. Oh could I use some more organization, that has been an ongoing goal for me for a couple years now! haha But while I have a few pounds I would like to shed, my main goal is feeling good, so just being healthy!

  11. I have about 10-12 lbs I'd like to lose, too. I've been meatless for just over 2 months & that didn't help at all. I need to give up baked goods & that's the hardest for me.

  14. You go girl! I know it sounds cliche but there is no better time like the present. I also think it doesn't have to be a "ok we are starting today" thing but more of just thinking about your choices and being aware.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I think this is great and who care if it's cliche, it's important to you! I feel like our stories are similar as bryce and i both were in better shape when we were doing long distance and before we were married. Life happens and you get busy and lazy. Oh and not to mention you are just truly happy being married so all you want to do is happy things like popcorn at the movies and dinner dates and cooking together and I love baking for him! I need to find a balance too, get some of that fluff off and be toned again. I know what you mean by other people may say you are tiny and you don't need to lose weight but its more of a personal thing how YOU feel in YOUR body. I get it. We are working on this very same thing now that the holidays are over and we can get back to our routine.

I might also try juicing. Have you? Would love to hear how it goes for you and if you find any great recipes etc. Good luck!!

  18. You are so right....it should be a lifestyle and not just something you do every once in a while. I was MUCH healthier over the last year and there are a few things that paved the way. I joined a bootcamp....I love the class because it becomes like a social setting and you see the same people all the time and the instructor is one of the most motivating people I have every met. I started drinking a lot more water...I carry a water bottle with me at all times and it is one where I can tell exactly how much I have been drinking. The last thing that I did that helped me so much is joined My Fitness Pal....AMAZING....once you see how many calories are in the cookie you eat every day, you will opt for some delicious fruit instead that you can eat so much more of:). I have a hard time with diets because they restrict what you can eat but with calorie counting, you eat what you want but learn portion control. I still have about 10 more pounds that I want to lose but I think I can do it:). Good luck to you! BTW...I heart your blog and your style:)...Happy New Year!

  19. Ugh... we need to be better about eating healthy and working out too. Before we got married, my husband and I LIVED at the gym and ate mostly great. And we felt great. I had enough energy to get up at 5 and go work out. Now? I couldn't even THINK about going for a run at 5 in the morning.

Of course right NOW isn't a good time to lose weight for me, but I could still eat better and work out. In fact I KNOW I need to do that.

    You can do it!!

    1. Do you know how many times i have tried to wake up early to work out?! bah! I wish I wasn't such a non morning person, it literally hurts to wake up early but I know that will be the best time for me to do it!

  20. Ha, my husband was the same way when I met him. All he ate for lunch was tuna fish (without miracle whip might I add) and he had tons of time for the gym. I loved going to the gym too so we've always been good about working out together. My problem is I kind of go to the gym so I can justify all the cookies I will eat after (oops). Then Brian started his business so he's had less time to work out and more baked goods to eat because I won't stop making them. A few months ago, I decided I wanted to be a better influence and start eating healthier. I still indulge in the occasional treat, but it's actually been fun to learn new healthy recipes.

Best of luck with your goals in the upcoming year. You'll rock it!

  21. Ugh, I gained close to 30 pounds in graduate school! It's hard to eat right and be healthy when your only goal is to study, stay up late, study more, and do projects. "If eating that doughnut will motivate me to study, I'll eat it..." 2 years later, I look like a doughnut! Lance and I are trying to loose weight this year too (actually we started back around my birthday in October). We just started writing down everything we ate and used a free website to calculate the calories.

After about a week of tracking (no changes, just seeing what we were eating) we were both pretty grossed out at the calorie/fat/sugar content of our diets. Something about seeing it on paper makes it real! From there we've made small changes..(like no more animal style fries at In and Out-but I still totally rock the cheeseburgers!) and we've both lost over 10 pounds from that and a little extra exercise each week...You guys can do it! Good luck!!

  28. That's funny you say that because I was just thinking the other day how pretty you are. You definitely do not need to lose weight, but I totally know that we know our own bodies and how we feel our best. I am definitely right there with you! I ran a half marathon in September and took off a few months from running, but kept eating like I was running and have gained 15 lbs in the last three months. I've drastically cut down my white flour and sugar intake and I've already noticed a difference (and I started running again). I try to do carb replacements- spaghetti squash instead of noodles, gluten-free Mary's crackers instead of regular crackers, a mandarin instead of dessert. I try to make sure I'm full and not depriving myself and, of course, have treats in moderation, like you said. I guess we're all going to be getting healthy together! :)

  36. Good luck on your resolution! It is challenging but also rewarding in the end. From my past, I know that if you go cold turkey on lot's of things that you used to eat, you will get depressed about food and it will be hard to go through with it (that happened to me anyway, I seriously live to eat!) So moderation is the key. My husband and I started out with no eating out. That made such a huge impact in our diet even if we did eat whatever we wanted at the house. Our next thing was not eat anything that comes out of a box or can. We are still working on this one, but we have noticed a big difference already. Baby steps!

Being former university athletes, Ryan and I both experienced the whole 'we used to be soooo buff and now we're ... well... not so much" :) But not for long. Health and fitness are priority number one over here as well. Best luck with your journey!!

  44. As cliche as "getting healthier is" --it's a good one. We all need it. I love "and then law school happened..." because that's pretty much what happened to my hubby too (well, optometry school). We are both hoping to get back on track this year :)

This is actually one of my New Years resolutions too but because of health issues that are pretty bad. I failed to get rid of them last year and I have decided once and for all it is time to get rid of these awful things and be my best self and have the healthy body God intended me to have. It is going to be tough - I have to go on an all no sugar, anything with yeast, bad thing, etc detox kind of diet. meats, nuts, beans and veggies is basically all I can eat but I really am excited to be better and once these things are gone, I can go back to having more normal food. I hope I can do it this year since I've had them for 5 years and it is time to take care of myself for me and my loved ones.

  50. This is the first year my body has ever been a priority for a new years resolution.... I guess having a baby will do that to you! But we got a ninja for Christmas and it's been SO great making smoothies each day and knowing we are getting our fair share of fruits and veggies (and knowing that Mia is getting it as well, ha ha!)
I definitely can't wait to start working out. Wish we could workout together :( But I've also noticed I'm much more conscious about what I'm eating... not for my body, but for Mia's. I turn down so many treats and soda and other crap because I don't want it to affect Mia. I don't know why I've never cared how it affects me.... but it's been eye opening to see how little I cared before!

    1. I wish you were here to be my work out buddy too!! Trevor and I both can't believe we have let ourselves gain so much weight! I am so motivated now and wish I had a gym buddy!

  51. It might be cliche (I don't think it is!), but it's a good resolution to have! I am embarking on this one as well. Having lost a bunch of weight a few years ago I am always trying to improve on my eating habits (and water drinking habits).

So good luck to you! You can do it!

  52. Girl!!! I'm totally with you on this one!!!! =)))))
I remember those old times when I used to eat EVERYTHING... I mean absolutely everything and still keep pretty much the same weight...
Then I got older and my body started needing some sports to stay in shape.... But instead I had 3 years of fastfood and pepsi with my ex-boyfriend =))))) Eeehhhmmmm.... Not so good =))))) You know what I mean =))))
During summer I could get back to my usual weight and feel sooooo much better....
And now... I'm married, working full time and still drinking some pepsi to not fall asleep at work =)))))) Sooo.... No time to work out!!! =)))))
2013 for me is going to be a year of self-perfection =)))) And getting back to shape is one of they key points I'm going to work on =))))
    Let's just DO IT!!! =))))))))))))
