A couple weeks ago Trevor and I were woken up around 4:30 in the morning to the loudest, scariest sound. It shook our entire apartment and followed with tons of cracking and loud snapping. Then there was one big smash. Our whole bodies felt it. I have felt many earth quakes so I knew it wasn't that. We had been in a deep sleep, and the next thing you know we had both jumped up in our beds in panic, as if simultaneously gasping from a nightmare.
"What on earth was that?" Trevor shouted.
"I don't know, but it kind of sounded like a tree falling?"
"How do you know what a tree falling sounds like?"
"I don't know, but I would imagine that it would sound just like that. If it wasn't a tree maybe it was thunder, but it isn't raining or anything so...."
We were too tired to get out of bed and figure it out, but before going back to bed I did say, "Well if I am right, and it was a tree, it better not have fallen in our parking lot, and I sure hope it didn't land on our car."
After a restless night of sleep (couldn't really fall back asleep after it happened) I walked into our front room and peaked out of our window. I could see a giant pile of green. Lo and behold a tree had fallen in our parking lot. I braced myself as I went outside hoping to not see our car under it. There was a crowd surrounded by a very large tree. On it's way down it had hit the side of our apartment building, tearing part of the roof off and smashing two cars. The two cars parked a couple spaces from our cars *phew* but the minute I felt happy for us, I felt bad for our neighbors. But considering how big the tree was the damage really was minimal.
That afternoon the crew who came to clean up the tree told us the other one that was next to it could go down at any minute and that they need to get it removed. So we couldn't park in our parking lot for awhile. Then they started repairing the roof and now I don't even need to start my alarm the dang nails start right above our bed nice and early for us... it sucks. We are the top floor and on the side where the tree hit, so it is extra loud for us :) haha. They should be done soon, and I can't wait for more sleep and my parking spot again!
Has anyone ever had something like this happen to their home, car, etc?! It is a pretty crazy experience?!
O gosh that must of been scary!
ReplyDeleteI was sleeping at the OH's house once and there was a huge bang in the middle of the night. It seemed so loud and really scared us (I even said in a half awake daze that I think it's the end of the world??? lol)... We looked outside and someone had crashed their car into quite a few of the parked ones outside. It was quite bad, but that noise really freaked me out!!

Oh my gracious! I am so glad y'all are okay...that is so scary! Glad there wasn't more damage than that and glad no one was hurt!
ReplyDeleteWow that is so scary!! I am glad that no one was hurt. I do feel bad for those two cars. Hopefully the noise stops soon!

Holyyyyy cow!! So glad no one got hurt but that stinksss for the cars =\
ReplyDeleteI haven't stopped in for awhile, but wanted to let you know I still read ... and still stalk ;) on IG! :)
Was it just a really old tree? Or from a storm? That stinks! Glad your car was okay, however if it was my car I'd be okay with it... It's old. LOL xoxo A-
ReplyDeleteThat's terrible! We usually only get downed trees in the winter... I can't imagine having that happen in the middle of fall! Glad you and your car were both okay.
ReplyDeleteoh gosh!! that's so scary! we had a ridiculous storm one night, where the cracks of thunder and lightening were so strong they shook the whole house and like made our hearts palpitate. in the middle of the night, there was an ear piercing, terrifying bolt of lightening... the next morning, we went out and the lightening had struck and burned a bolt looking burn on a tree RIGHT NEXT to our room. omg. so scary.
ReplyDeletethat must have been so scary and surreal. glad no-one was hurt and that your car survived :)
ReplyDeleteYikes! That is scary! We lived in a house out in the woods (basically) for a couple years and we had a really bad ice storm once that caused limbs to snap and break all over the place. Thankfully nothing hit our house or car, but there were constantly really loud and scary sounds of branches snapping and falling. We couldn't even go to work b/c our driveway was completely blocked by fallen tree limbs.
ReplyDeleteWow that sounds really scary! Glad you're both ok! Nothing like that has happened to me before.
ReplyDeleteWe woke up to a loud crack noise a few months ago, only it wasn't a tree falling it was a drunk driver crashing through our mailbox and into our tree in the front yard. It never is fun to be woken up in the middle of the night by unsettling sounds. Glad the crew was able to clean it up though:) Bon Fire time:)
ReplyDeleteYikes, this sounds so scary! I am impressed you didn't get out of bed to see what had happened!
ReplyDeleteHow scary! I had a large branch fall on top of my car years ago, it didn't do too much damage but as soon as I heard/saw it my heart sank!

oh my goodness! I definitely wouldn't have been able to go back to sleep after that...unless I had gone out to check & see what it was!
ReplyDeleteglad everyone was ok and didn't do too much damage!
Yikes! I'm glad it didn't hurt anyone!
ReplyDeleteSomething similar happened at Girls Camp my last year. We were all gathered at the amphitheater singing camp songs and stuff when we hear this crazy loud cracking noise coming from nearby. The tree that fell BARELY missed one of the cabin porches, along with the 4 or 5 girls who were just coming out of their cabin for the sing-a-long. Yeah. Talk about freaky!
ReplyDeleteOH NO GLAD YOU ARE OK
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness!!!! Glad your car and appartment survived! The other day we got up to a tree that had fallen about three yards from our van.... So not cool!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear no one was hurt from the falling tree. Too bad for the people whose cars were damaged. No, I haven't had this experience. I don't want to have it. I'll try not to park under big giant trees anymore. But I really like the shade.
ReplyDeleteThat is crazy! Glad it didn't land in anyone's apartment. No tree incident for us but thunder in our backyard once.
ReplyDeleteNever had anything like this happen to me but I wouldn't be a fan if i did..ha I am glad your cars are totaled and hopefully your neighbors will be able to get that all worked out. Glad you're safe. Provo is never full of dull moments that's for sure. We just have the obnoxious trains close to us. Joy!
ReplyDeletewow! I bet that was crazy! :o We had a branch land on our roof once. It wasn't very big and didn't damage anything but it was definitely startling! lol. gosh. I'm glad you and your car are safe!! <3

So scary! At least it didn't fall directly on your apartment or on your car. That would have been horrible! When I lived in Maryland there was a hurricane and a tree fell in my backyard. Luckily it fell across the road because if it had fallen the other way, it would have been right on my room! Glad you are okay!

OH MY GOSH! So glad that you're ok! I've seen this happen in VA but only during storms.
ReplyDeletewow! nuts! what a story! i would of crapped my pants in the middle of the night hearing the tree come down!
ReplyDeleteThat happened to me growing up - a HUGE tree fell down in my parents' backyard and missed my bedroom by about 5 feet! It scared the bejeezus out of me! I hope your house is safe and quiet again soon :)
ReplyDeleteA few years ago we had a huge ice storm that took out most of the power around these parts. I still lived at home at the time, but my parents and I worked at the same office. at 6am my dad got a phone call that work had been cancelled because no electricity. While my dad's boss was on the phone I watched a tree limb land on my car and I screamed at the top of my lungs. My dad's boss said, "sounds like a fun day at your house." Luckily all it did was ruin my spoiler and put a small dent in the trunk but dang!
ReplyDeleteMy inlaws had a tree fall on their camper and destroy it. We've been more lucky with trees.
ReplyDeleteholy cow that's crazy! I'm glad the damage was minimal and no one was hurt! :)
ReplyDeleteLast semester our house manager was fixing the roof because it would leak all over my roomie's bed, but he liked to start bright and early too. He was definitely not my favorite person then.
crazy! glad it wasn't your car!
ReplyDeleteuhhh good thing you're still living....
ReplyDeleteHope all is well.

Oh, Just Living the Dream
Yikes! That is crazy - thank goodness it didn't do severe damage to your builing. I feel bad for the people who's car got smushed, but thank goodness it wasn't yours! : (
ReplyDeleteOh gosh! Thank goodness it didn't hit your car! But I do feel bad for the others, I know it could of been worse, but still!
ReplyDeleteI use to live on a 100 acre farm, so I've seen this happen a lot. Luckily not on our home!
That is so scary! lad to know that you are unharmed. So sad for the owners of those cars who got smashed. =(

Wow! This sounds crazy. Fortunately, we've never had anything like this happen to our actual house, but last year there was an ice storm that knocked down several trees and power lines. Their locations happened to box us in to our street for 5 days while crews tried to tend to all of the damage. One day, we thought we were going to be able to escape, because they'd cleared one tree, but when we pulled our car around the corner, we were boxed in by a new power line across a road. Mother Nature, huh? Not so "motherly" if you ask me. ;)
ReplyDeleteYikes I'm glad it wasn't any worse than it was.
ReplyDeleteThis made me think of my old apartment complex back in Rochester, NY. We had these carports or whatever you called them and one day we woke up and found that one of them had collapsed. A few cars were not so lucky. A friend of mine had a spot there but she was so lucky that she parked in an uncovered spot!
They rebuilt the whole thing only for the same carport to be burned down within a year later (after we moved out). How unfortunate! The same friend who was still there was lucky once again.
Holy crap, what a crazy experience! I've never had anything like that happen...it's a good thing the tree didn't do more damage! Those poor peoples' cars though - hope they had insurance =]
