Marathon.

Back in 2009 I ran the Salt Lake City Half Marathon. I had been wanting a big goal for myself to help me get back into shape and be healthier. I had never thought I would ever run any type of marathon because lets face it... they seem totally crazy, right?!

I have always been extremely active, and played sports year round growing up, but I never considered myself a "runner." I liked to play sports where you were focused on something else besides the fact that you were running. Truth is, I absolutely hate running... but I LOVE the way you feel after you have ran. Nothing really beats it. So because of this, and along with the fact that I like to be healthy, I run.

I remember the first thing that came to my mind after I finished the half marathon was... "I will never do a full marathon!" haha Yet, I couldn't shake how amazing finishing that half marathon felt. To do something you didn't think you could actually do, or pull off... is one of THE best feelings in the world. I remember how proud of myself I was, how in awe I was of the capabilities of our bodies. I loved setting a goal for myself, and completing it.

So I knew... I just knew deep down, that someday I had to try and do a full marathon. At least one. Just to say I had done it, and because I knew if the half felt that great, I could only imagine how amazing finishing a full could be. Especially because I am petrified I will fail. Fear can drive the best out of us, and I have learned that I love making goals I am afraid of, because completing those goals tend to have the most rewarding outcome.

So with that said, me and some members of my family have signed up and were accepted into the St. George Marathon this year! Let the training, complaining, crying, "why did I want to do this again?" all start! Ready or not, here I come. One more life goal will be marked off my list come October 2012! :)

  1. Good Luck Girl! I am training for my first marathon right now and I'd have to say, that for me, the distances (in training) aren't that hard it's just the sheer amount of time it takes. The long runs are LONG! You can do it!

  2. Holy moly, you are crazy! You can do it, though, and I'm sure you will be so glad that you did!!!

  4. gooooood luck! I've decided I'm going to run a marathon, too :) I've started training but I'm doing it step by step - my first 10k is in June and then I'm doing a half marathon in October, and (hopefully) a marathon spring/summer 2013! Yay running!

  7. YOWZA!

Kudos to you for making this decision, and for putting in the hard yards ahead of the October marathon.

My most heartfelt and best wishes!

I've toyed with the idea of running a marathon (like you, I'm not a runner but have always been athletic and into sports since childhood) but fear I'd collapse into a hyperventilat-y heap and curl up like a pretzel on the bitumen. EEEEK!

  8. That's so awesome! You can definitely do it :) My dad is/was a marathon runner. He's run so many I lost count a long time ago. I love getting to watch him at the finish line because no matter what he always smiles! I wish I had more will power to make myself run like that!

  11. That is soooooooooooo exciting!!! I ran a marathon back in 2006 (Chicago) and boy was that an experience. It was cold, windy and rainy... Just miserable! I think I'm still recovering and that was 6 years ago! As long as you do the training I'm sure you will do great! It's an awesome accomplishment! For now, I stick with the half marathons and less! Can't wait to hear your updates on training!!! xoxo A-

  12. That's amazing. I used to be a runner, until I ripped my IT band in my left hip and my running career was over. I wish I could run a marathon, it's always been a dream of mine.

  14. Good luck!! That is a HUGE goal to accomplish! I can't get myself to run at all, I hate it so much, but I have wanted to at least try and do a half marathon. Maybe someday!! But kudos to you for going for it full swing!

  15. i'd bet the beginning and end would be the best parts. make sure you eat icecream (sparingly of course) to get through the middle!

  16. You are not running a whole marathon! Girl, you are my inspiration. I just made it through a 5k {pathetic, I know}, but I'm excited to hear about your progress!

  17. I know EXACTLY what you mean. I have done several half marathons and said I would NEVER to do a full marathon. Now here I am running the full Ogden marathon in 4 days... AHHH. The training hasn't been so bad (check out Hal Higdon's website for some great training schedules) Also, I run the Salt Lake 1/2 marathon every year, love it! Good luck at the St. George marathon.

  19. First, I LOVE your new running shoes!! So bright and fun.

Second, I recently started training for my first 5K and am DYING. I'm so impressed that you'll be training for a marathon! But if you've run a half you can definitely do a whole :) Good luck training!!

  20. Best of fortune to you!

I've never done a marathon....a part of me has always wanted to, but I wouldn't want to run it alone & most of the people I know are anti running anything except to the couch. Sad right?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wow, you go girl!!! That is so awesome. I've definitely said the same things to myself...even about a 5k. Who would want to do that? haha But I have one 5k behind me and wouldn't mind doing another! Maybe one of these days I'll actually run the whole thing...ha.
Good luck!!! You can do it, we believe in you! :)

  22. Good luck girl! That is awesome! I should really get my bottom motivated to run a race soon!

  23. Go you!!! That is EXACTLY. EXACTLY. how I feel about running. I do it because of how amazing I feel after having worked up a sweat & raised my heart rate, and because it's easy & measurable - but while I'm doing it I want to kill it!

I mean, if running was a physical thing I would punch it in its face.

Still, marathons are impressive as hell, I'd love to say I'd done one one day. :)

  40. that is so exciting! i ran the chicago marathon and while i was training said it was a one time thing and i'd never do it again. the second I crossed the finish line I knew I had to do it again! I did in the year later, and said the same thing! I'm hoping to do it again sometime in the future - races are definitely addicting and worth all the hard training! good luck!!

  43. AMAZING.
I am so excited for you; I just ran a 10K Saturday and felt so rewarded and hyped up because of it. My next is in 3 weeks and I keep piling them on. I have the goal to run a marathon by December!

It's definitely those "hard" goals that give us the vibe of so much more accomplishment!

Keep up with your goal-- you'll do great!

  46. i really wanna do a half, but i don't have anyone to do it with. however, i don't think ill ever do a marathon. my mom's done the St. George i think 15 times so you will like it. just be careful because if you do it multiple times it will do more harm than good to your body.
